Electric Scooter & E-Bike IP Ratings Explained
A source-cited explanation of enclosure ingress-protection codes, their limits, and cautiously labelled examples from the WattToRide catalogue.
What an IP code describes
IEC 60529 classifies protection provided by an electrical enclosure. The code covers access to hazardous parts, ingress of solid foreign objects and, when indicated, harmful ingress of water. It is an enclosure test classification—not a general promise that an entire electric scooter is waterproof, safe to ride in rain, or covered for water damage.
How to read the two positions

| Second character after IP | 0–9 or X | Protection against harmful effects from water ingress under the specified test. |
An X means that a numeral is not specified in that position. For example, IPX6 records the second-position water classification but does not state a first-position solids numeral. X should not be silently converted to zero or treated as proof of a separate dust test.
What the rating does not answer
- Which scooter parts or enclosure boundaries the manufacturer says the rating covers.
- Whether seals, charge-port covers or prior damage are in the required condition.
- Whether a particular ride, puddle, pressure, duration or submersion matches the test conditions.
- Whether water exposure is permitted by the user manual or covered by the seller or manufacturer warranty.
- Corrosion resistance, traction, braking distance, visibility, rider safety or local road legality.
- How protection changes after wear, maintenance, impact, disassembly or modification.
How to compare scooter claims
- Copy the exact code, including every X and any component-specific wording.
- Find the manufacturer manual or product source and identify what enclosure or parts the claim covers.
- Read wet-weather, charging, drying, storage, warranty and maintenance instructions.
- Do not infer that a larger second numeral authorises riding in every condition.
- Check current local road-authority guidance separately; an IP code is not a road-use permission.
